Emma Kilbride travelled to Ljubljana with the the Irish National Softball Squad in 2006, her fifth successive representation in the  Irish team.  Funnily enough she shared a caravan with Peter.

What do I remember from my trip to Slovenia?

The atmosphere in the squad was one of the best I can remember. We had a "buddy" system in place so everyone in the squad had someone to look out for and encourage during the week. Despite management boasting tales of bedside Jacuzzis the squad shared close quarters in the form of "mobile homes" in the Ljubljana Resort. "Cosy" would be one way to describe them.

CaravanPicture four softballers thrown into Wanderley Wagon after a day of softball in 30º heat. Add in 8 cleats, four mitts and various undergarments. Then challenge them to produce a three course meal Ready Steady Cook Style with a box of cornflakes, a cucumber and an unidentified piece of meat, how nobody got food poisoning is beyond me! But with the help of the impressive pool complex, the numerous pots of Tea from the Dodder mobile and the heated games of PIT, we all survived the week to do what we were there to do.

The softball was as it should be played - flat fields, sunshine, bleachers and beer! Our expectations were high and we played some good softball against some competitive teams. Although our finish was disappointing experience was gained and lessons were learned. It's a fantastic opportunity to play in an international competition and one every player should be proud of, and I can't wait to get back there next week to compete with the Pak !
