I had one thing in mind when thinking of the European Cup Tournament in Slovenia. I wanted to play in the final. I believed we had the team good enough to get there and the strategy for the week that would ramp us up nicely towards the elimination rounds. Now that it is all done and dusted and we didn’t finish where I aspired I can try and figure out where the BatPak juggernaut was derailed and what happened off the pitch in the down time.
So it’s over. As soon as BatPak had won its second successive Leinster League Premier Division Title last year, we all knew that we were not going to turn down the opportunity to represent Ireland in this year’s ESF equivalent of the Champions League, and I for one am very glad that we made the trip to Ljubljana last week. Unfortunately BatPak narrowly missed out on the chance to play the favourites, Chromies, in the Grand Final, and therefore the possibility of winning the Gold Medal, a feat that that Dodder managed in 2009. We did however finish with the Bronze medal.
Peter Mullen tells of his first thoughts since arriving - and how his trip to Slovenia was
What better way to greet someone thats been up since 5am than to wear the sour puss, for which you were specifically chosen for the role of Ryanair "hostess", across your mal-decorated with cheap makeup, face.
There was little cheer from the Ryanair staff at Dublin airport but then I am yet to meet one with any advanced social graces, so it should have come as no surprise.
Emma Kilbride travelled to Ljubljana with the the Irish National Softball Squad in 2006, her fifth successive representation in the Irish team. Funnily enough she shared a caravan with Peter.
What do I remember from my trip to Slovenia?
The atmosphere in the squad was one of the best I can remember. We had a "buddy" system in place so everyone in the squad had someone to look out for and encourage during the week. Despite management boasting tales of bedside Jacuzzis the squad shared close quarters in the form of "mobile homes" in the Ljubljana Resort. "Cosy" would be one way to describe them.
Peter Mullen was part of the Irish National Softball Squad that finished third in the European Championships in 2006. He looks back to the trip with a fond gastronomical recollection.
What do I remember from my trip to Slovenia?
The bit that sticks out was the lump in my back after a 15stone latino mute ploughed the fringes of the infield and left me relegated from my bed to the sofa bed in the 'lounge area' of our mobile home. While I am on the subject of the mobile homes, ill say they did the job amply. They were by no means equiped for Masterchef 2006 but we did manage to whip up a pasta salad one evening. I cant remember who won the squad cook off but ill say it was Mobile #2.
